What is Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)?

In Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), the molten filament is applied layer by layer with a filament roller (e.g. PLA plastic roller, but other materials such as ABS, TPE, etc. are also possible) and a heated nozzle. Here the entire platform moves and the 3D printed part is built up from the bottom up.

With this method, support structures must be created in order to be able to produce the complete contour of the 3D printed part! The density of the part can be influenced via infill (degree of filling).

3D printing (FDM) is a rapid prototyping process. If you have developed a new product or need an individual part, then 3D printing is an ideal method to get the desired result in your own hands as quickly as possible.

operating principle

The functional principle of 3D printing FDM Fused Deposition Modeling is relatively simple. The starting point is a printable 3D model (e.g. stl, step, iges, sldprt). This is first cut into layers with software (slicing).  Man uses a plastic thread on a roll (filament) as the starting material. This is heated and melted with a print head in very small amounts. The print head is a very small extruder that can move in several axes in the work area. In this way, the liquid particles are brought to the previously programmed position via the print head. After positioning, the material solidifies again. In this way, a component is created layer by layer from a 3D data set.
In the case of solid bodies, these are usually not printed in full, but provided with support structures (infill). As a result, less material is required and the printing process is accelerated
